Humanity is on the brink in Brad Anderson's new film Worldbreaker, and it's up to one young girl to stand against the coming threat. The official trailer for the upcoming sci-fi fantasy has been released, casting Resident Evil franchise lead Milla Jovovich and The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and Beauty and the Beast live-action remake star Luke Evans as parents to Willa (Billie Boullet), one of the few survivors of a war that desolated the world. While her mother stood as one of the fiercest warriors on the frontline against a mysterious force of monsters, her battle-scarred father took her to a remote island to keep safe and prepare to survive when the monsters inevitably come for them. The footage teases her tale of endurance as she tries to step out of the shadows and find her own courage against dire odds.
Worldbreaker takes place in the aftermath of the rise of the Breakers, monstrous beings that twist and infect the humans they attack. In almost no time at all, the men who stood to fight were the first to fall, leaving women, like Willa's heroic mother, on the front lines in a desperate, all-out attempt to save humanity. The trailer wastes no time showing the horrors of the war and emphasizing that the world is close to breaking permanently. According to Willa's father, entire towns were lost, and much of the populace met grim ends. It's meant as motivation for her survival training, as he teaches her to be smart, quick, and strong. From the way her mother spoke, humanity is on the losing end of its struggle, and it's only a matter of time before the front line falls and the monsters reach Willa and her father's doorsteps. When that moment comes, her dad assures her that as long as she's alive, the world isn't broken just yet, and there's still time to fight.
The trailer also gives the entire family chances to lean into the action as they face the horrors of Worldbreaker head-on. Unlike Resident Evil, though, Jovovich and her co-stars often only have the sword in their hands to fight back against the horde. Between their brutal fights for survival, Willa and her father will also see the fragile peace they've enjoyed interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious girl. In her longing for connection, Willa keeps her hidden in secret with them, but when the truth emerges, danger follows. It's just another emotional hardship for the young girl to confront as she comes into her own as a survivor and embraces what she learned from her father.
Who Else Is Involved in 'Worldbreaker'?
Known for his chilling cult horror hit Session 9 and the Christian Bale-led psychological thriller, The Machinist, Anderson directs Worldbreaker from a screenplay penned by The Dark Knight actor Joshua Rollins. Rollins also serves as a co-producer with Katy Jackson, with Martin Brennan, Jib Polhemus, Bradley Gallo, Michael Helfant, and Tracy Mercer all credited as producers. Mila Harris also joins the main trio of stars on-screen, fresh off co-starring with Justin Long in the wild comedy thriller Coyotes.
Worldbreaker hits theaters in the U.S. on January 30. Check out the trailer in the player above.
