Despite the huge upset win by the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, not everything was great for Pittsburgh. In the first half, the cameras caught sight of Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf in a verbal altercation with a Lions fan that ended with Metcalf throwing a punch up at the fan.
The broadcast crew discussed the incident at length after it happened and it was noted that the NFL does plan to investigate the incident on Monday to determine what would be an appropriate punishment. It should be noted that the officials on the field took no action at the time and Metcalf continued to play.
In terms of precedent, the most recent is September of this season, when Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson shoved a fan in the stands while celebrating a touchdown over the Buffalo Bills. Jackson issued an apology to the fan for his actions and the NFL took no action against Jackson for the incident.
