It's only a matter of time before we end up seeing The Flash in the new DCU. Likewise, James Gunn recently commented on which version of the Scarlet Speedster he likes the most (and his answer was very exciting).
At the recent premiere for the release of Supergirl's first trailer, James Gunn was asked by Younis Alzubeiri (via Instagram) which version of The Flash he liked best. While Gunn's response didn't actually pick one definitive speedster over the other, it still ignited some exciting confidence about how The Flash will be adapted from the comics and into the new DCU.
"Blondes or Redheads?" - James Gunn Confirmed He Loves Both Versions Of The Flash
Wally Barry Hug
At the Supergirl trailer premiere, James Gunn was specifically asked if he prefers blondes or redheads when it comes to his superpowered speedsters. This was, of course, a reference to Barry Allen and Wally West, as both heroes share the Flash mantle in the current DC Comics. As such, Gunn gave the best answer he could have possibly given: he loves them both.
While many DC Comics fans view Barry Allen's Flash as the "gold standard" Flash, Wally West has very much grown into the Flash role, having more than earned the title after his many years as Kid Flash, arguably becoming the DC Universe's most powerful speedster of all time.
Two Flashes Are Way Better Than One For The New DCU
Flashes Barry and Wally Running with Family DC
The DCU only stands to gain by featuring both Barry Allen and Wally West (rather than picking one over the other).
For example, Barry Allen has a brilliant scientific mind and has often been the moral center of the Justice League. Comparatively, Wally brings strong emotion to the mantle, taking speed to its absolute limits, while very much embodying the idea that sidekicks can indeed surpass their mentors.
Overall, the comics have proven that The Flash works best as a legacy, rather than a single speedster on his own. Likewise, embracing both Scarlet Speedsters naturally opens the door to an entire live-action Flash Family in the DCU (Jay Garrick, Max Mercury, Impulse, Jesse Quick, etc).
