Marvel Suggests Doctor Doom Will Return Sooner Than Expected In 2026

Just in time for Avengers: Doomsday's debut of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, Marvel suggests comic-book Doom will return sooner than expected.

Sadly, Doctor Doom's best ending will be undone too quickly before Avengers: Doomsday arrives. Throughout the decades, Doctor Doom has defended his spot as the most iconic villain in the Marvel Universe. It's precisely because of this prestige that Doom deserves a worthy sendoff, which he finally received in 2025.

As revealed in the One World Under Doom finale, Doctor Doom leaves his entire fortune to Valeria Richards before fading away, having traded his life for Valeria's resurrection. Doom's death crashes his empire and returns peace to the world, but it also gives Doom one final victory, as leaving a political vacuum and making Valeria one of the richest people in the world will probably unleash a catastrophic chain reaction.

Doctor Doom Won't Be Dead For Long In The Comics, Unfortunately

Marvel Teases Doom's Return In 2026

Doctor Doom dies on his own terms in 2025. Although it's obvious that Doom won't remain dead forever, his bittersweet defeat goes perfectly in line with his personality and his partially successful global takeover. But only a couple of weeks after his death, Marvel has already confirmed Doom will return. Marvel's description for the Armaggeddon-themed Comics Giveaway Day 2026 special issue reads:

“The heroes of the Marvel Universe assemble to take on the Red Hulk in a critical story by Chip Zdarsky that sets the stage for this summer’s Marvel event…ARMAGEDDON! Armageddon is here, and no one is safe from the coming end. PLUS: Your first look at this summer’s big X-MEN event…and DOOM!”

Marvel's plans for Doctor Doom in 2026 are unknown, but if Doom comes back to life anytime within a year, it would be too soon. The ramifications of Doom's inheritance falling into unexpected hands, Valeria Richards' feelings over Doom's sacrifice, and the global aftermath following Doom's death and Latveria's drastic transformation in the absence of its emperor are all worthy of a deep dive over several comics. If Doom returns, all focus snaps back to him.

MCU Synergy Is Simply Too Strong

With Robert Downey Jr. carrying the spotlight as the MCU's Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Comics faces pressure to ensure a version of the character is active on the stands at the same time. When casual audiences see Doom shining on the big screen, many viewers will inevitably want to check what Doctor Doom is currently doing in the comics. Doctor Doom remaining dead through Avengers: Doomsday wouldn't be too business-savvy.

This pattern of altering comics for the MCU is well-established. Marvel famously made Nick Fury Jr. the main Nick Fury in Marvel Comics to match Samuel L. Jackson’s MCU Fury. Kamala Khan died only to come back as a mutant just in time to align with her MCU counterpart. Even the Eternals were killed and reborn with genders and appearances matching their live-action counterparts. When a character becomes a billion-dollar film asset, their comic-book autonomy often takes a backseat to brand uniformity.

Whatever story the Russos tell with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom will likely influence the comics. If the MCU portrays Doom as a Stark variant, the comics may feel compelled to mirror that connection. One way or another, Doctor Doom and Iron Man may be linked together in the MCU, and the comics might follow suit, at least temporarily.
